Great food, great hospitality, great vibes! Located right at the corner of Japan village too and has 2 hour parking validation. Absolutely loved the tofu sampler! The tofu is all made in house and paired with such unique flavors. The tamagoyaki omelette is so fluffy and flavorful! Skirt steak is so tender as well. Delicious and fairly priced meal!
Overview
When you find yourself in downtown Los Angeles, a visit to Izakaya Gazen is an experience you won’t want to miss. Located at 362 1st St, Los Angeles, CA 90012, this charming restaurant brings the spirit of Japan right to the heart of the city. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted with a warm, inviting atmosphere that combines both modern and traditional touches, making it the perfect spot for both casual diners and those looking to indulge in an authentic izakaya experience.
The menu at Izakaya Gazen is an absolute delight, offering a wide range of dishes that cover everything from fresh sashimi to grilled skewers. One of the standout features of the restaurant is its extensive selection of appetizers. The crispy karaage chicken is a fan favorite-crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, served with a tangy dipping sauce that complements the dish perfectly. For those craving something a bit lighter, the goma-ae (spinach with sesame dressing) provides a refreshing, savory balance to the heavier dishes.
As you dive into the main courses, don’t miss out on the yakitori. These grilled skewers are made to perfection, with options ranging from chicken thigh to vegetables, all expertly seasoned and cooked over an open flame. Each bite is a perfect blend of smoky flavors and juicy tenderness. For those in the mood for a hot dish, the sizzling hot stone bowl rice, often served with seafood or meat, is a comforting choice that never disappoints. The steam rising from the bowl only adds to the excitement as the rice crisps up along the edges, creating a delicious crunchy texture.
The sushi at Izakaya Gazen deserves its own mention. The fish is always incredibly fresh, and the chefs take great care in preparing each piece with precision and attention to detail. Whether you go for a classic tuna nigiri or something a bit more adventurous like the eel, you’ll find the flavors delicate yet bold, showcasing the true artistry of Japanese cuisine. Pair these with a cold glass of sake, and you’ve got yourself a meal that feels both special and comforting.
When it comes to drinks, Izakaya Gazen offers an impressive selection of sake and beer, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. The sake list features both traditional options and newer varieties, making it a great place to explore different tastes. For those who prefer beer, you can enjoy a cold bottle of Asahi or a local craft beer while chatting with friends and enjoying the lively, friendly ambiance.
Izakaya Gazen also makes sure that the dining experience is a social one. The open kitchen allows you to watch the chefs at work, adding an element of entertainment to your meal. The staff here is incredibly friendly and attentive, always making sure your needs are met without being overbearing. It’s clear that customer service is a top priority, and that friendly atmosphere encourages guests to linger a little longer, savoring each bite and enjoying the conversation.
Another notable aspect of Izakaya Gazen is its ability to cater to a wide range of dietary preferences. Whether you’re a vegetarian, pescatarian, or have specific dietary restrictions, the menu offers enough variety to ensure that everyone can find something they’ll enjoy. This versatility is key to the restaurant’s appeal, especially for groups or families who may have diverse tastes.
The ambiance at Izakaya Gazen is another highlight. The intimate setting is perfect for a date night or a relaxed evening with friends. Whether you're seated at the bar or one of the intimate tables, the space feels comfortable and welcoming, with just the right amount of energy to make you feel at ease.
For those who want to take a piece of the experience home, Izakaya Gazen also offers takeout options, allowing you to enjoy their delicious offerings in the comfort of your own home. However, there’s something special about enjoying a meal in the restaurant itself-there’s an energy and vibe that simply can’t be replicated elsewhere.

Friendly staff, excellent food, and great atmosphere all around. Staff are very attentive to your needs. There's a very good chance you might have missed this restaurant as it slightly off the beaten path but this is one of the best dining experience I had in Little Tokyo. I've been here multiple times before and it's been exquisite experience every time. Price of food is similar to any other sushi restaurants you'd find in the central plaza but their quality stands above the rest. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to simply eat great food. Keep in mind of their hours of operations as they have a small break in their service to swap from their lunch menu to dinner menu.
Very good quality food, very authentic. great ingredients, clean restaurant. Absolutely fantastic meal. Sushi was great, soba noodles were very yummy. Absolutely recommend the yuzu tofu salad, it was the best thing.
They have very good authentic Japanese probably my favorite izakaya spot in LA, I recommend their tofu sampler and beef tongue, they also have very hood quality sashimi as well, highly recommended
I took my father here because he was craving Japanese food and this was a quality spot. Started with green tea and edemame which were great. The pork sausage was delicious but a lot of pieces. I had their miso cod which was excellent along with their tempura. I ordered one of their sashimi plates and it was delicious with phenomenal fish quality. The chicken karrage was also very delicious. My father and I had an excellent lunch and dining experience. I’d definitely come back again to try their other menu items.
We went there twice for our 1 week trip! Excellent service with amazing food! Totally Japanese food, highly recommended!
I had a wonderful experience at Izakaya Gazen in downtown Los Angeles. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and the drinks, especially the Yuzu cider, were fantastic. Highly recommended!
